Chris Schultheiss composed a letter that evening (an e-bluey) at his New Smyrna Beach home addressed to Gen. Tommy Franks on March 20 via the British Forces Post Office e-Bluey system. Within hours a British soldier hand-delivered the sealed letter to General Tommy Franks in Qatar. Not long after General Franks sent a letter to Chris thanking him for the demonstration and the following month SuperLetter was invited to make a presentation to the Military Postal Service Agency in Alexandria, Virginia.
All branches of the service were represented at the presentation but in keeping with a tradition of being on the leading edge, it was the Marine Corps that showed initial interest and coordinated a trial at Camp Fox Kuwait. The President of SuperLetter.Com Inc., Bill Ramsay, visited Camp Lejeune at the invitation of Major Stephens and Captain Givens working with "Family Support" groups to assist them in teaching others how to use the service. On the first day of the trial approximately a dozen letters were sent and delivered to Camp Fox along with a test letter from USMC Major Stephens at Camp Lejeune mailed to Colonel Roberts at Camp Fox providing delivery in less 24 hours halfway around the world.
The trial was deemed successful but it was not until a year later that the development of the MotoMail service was contracted. It was actually launched on December 4th, 2004 in time for the Christmas holidays.
The service was accepted almost immediately and within 6 months the projected volumes had tripled and the USMC came very close to running out of the MotoMail forms that the letters are printed on. An overnight shipment of 15,000 of the British Forces e-Bluey forms kept the service operating until more MotoMail forms could be manufactured and shipped.
The Motomail is service currently is a "one-way" service allowing US 'Family and Friends' to send letters to US Marines in both Iraq and Afghanistan and in the spring of 2005 Navy and Army personnel co-located with the Marines were added to the service.
The USMC and SuperLetter are currently negotiating the renewal of the Motomail contract with the expectation that the service will become a two-way service in the second year of operation allowing Marines to send Motomails back to their 'Family and Friends' in the US.
To best understand the impact of MotoMail one simply has to read a few of the many comments we receive:
Motomail is AWESOME! Our Marine son has had sporadic access to email and phone while deployed but ALWAYS got his Motomail quickly. This has allowed our entire family and friends to keep in touch and we all appreciate the service. Thank you! |
Our son called this morning. His first words after I love you and miss you were "thanks for the motomails, they are my lifeline to my family". Thank you so much for this great service.

The MotoMail service has been watched carefully by the other branches of the service and we anticipate that the USMC MotoMail service will be the trendsetter for all US forces abroad. |
